Optical spectroscopy and photodissociation dynamics of multiply charged ions
نویسنده
چکیده
Multiply charged ions are intruiging species whose reactivity and thermodynamic stability depends on the extent of ligation. The possibility of dissociating to two singly charged ions, which is often highly exothermic, leads to spectroscopy and dissociation dynamics that are qualitatively different from their singly charged counterparts. Various methods of producing multiply charged ions are discussed. Spectroscopy of small molecular dications, ligated/solvated transition metal dications, and multiply charged biological ions and metal cluster ions are discussed, with emphasis on our studies of d–d transitions in solvated transition metal dications, and the ensuing dissociation dynamics. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Structural and electrostatic effects at the surfaces of size- and charge-selected aqueous nanodrops† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available. See DOI: 10.1039/c7sc00481h Click here for additional data file.
The effects of ion charge, polarity and size on the surface morphology of size-selected aqueous nanodrops containing a single ion and up to 550 water molecules are investigated with infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and theory. IRPD spectra of M(H2O)n where M 1⁄4 La, Ca, Na, Li, I , SO4 and supporting molecular dynamics simulations indicate that strong interactions between multiply...
متن کاملLine Shapes of Multiply-Charged Ions: Ion Dynamics and Concentration Effects
The model microfield method has been applied to the broadening of spectral lines emitted by multiply charged hydrogenic ions in pure and binary mixtures. Special attention is paid to the calculation of the ionic microfield distribution function. Extensive comparisons with other theoretical results are performed. Fine structure effects are shortly discussed. This
متن کاملRecent developments in the ion/ion chemistry of high-mass multiply charged ions.
The ability to form multiply charged high-mass ions in the gas-phase, most notably via electrospray ionization (ESI), has allowed the study of many different combinations of positively and negatively charged ions. The charged products are directly amenable to study with mass spectrometry. Ion/ion reactions have proved to be "universal" in the sense that the high exothermicities and large rate c...
متن کاملProbing chemical dynamics with negative ions.
Experiments are reviewed in which key problems in chemical dynamics are probed by experiments based on photodetachment and/or photoexcitation of negative ions. Examples include transition state spectroscopy of biomolecular reactions, spectroscopy of open shell van der Waals complexes, photodissociation of free radicals, and time-resolved dynamics in clusters. The experimental methods used in th...
متن کاملPerspective: Electrospray photoelectron spectroscopy: From multiply-charged anions to ultracold anions.
Electrospray ionization (ESI) has become an essential tool in chemical physics and physical chemistry for the production of novel molecular ions from solution samples for a variety of spectroscopic experiments. ESI was used to produce free multiply-charged anions (MCAs) for photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in the late 1990 s, allowing many interesting properties of this class of exotic species ...
